What is it and how does it work?

How does it Work?

There are a few fundamental ways in which Smart Home Technology works. Some items work out of the box via a Wi-Fi connection, whilst others require Bluetooth or a Hub/Bridge. Most Smart Home Technology is controlled by a Smartphone app, available on most Android or iOS devices. Whilst all can be controlled by an App, you need to be aware if your items require more than just a phone and wifi. Here's our guide to whether you'll be a Hub or not:

Requires a Hub

Requires just Wifi or Bluetooth

Scenes and Groups

Scenes allow lots of devices to be commanded together. For example, you might have a "Good Night" scene which turns off all of the Smart Lighting within your home, turns off the TV and turns on the Home Security System. Or, you might have a "Wake Up" scene which gently lights up the bedroom and turns on the kettle. These are also known as Action Groups or Device Groups

What is Geofencing?

Geofencing gives you the ability to configure pre-determined instructions for your Smart Home System, based on the distance between you and your home. You might have a configuration that turns on your Home Security System whenever you go further than 1 mile from your home and have it disarm itself as soon as you arrive back home. Or, you might have it so that your heating turns on whenever you're close to home, meaning you no longer have to walk into a cold home again.

What about Third Parties?

Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google home and other third party technology can be used in conjunction with most Smart home Technology. It doesn't technically control any of it, but what this Third Party tech can do is directly interact with Smart Home Hubs or apps, which in turn apply whichever change you want.

How does Alexa Work?

Take an everyday example of how you'd use Alexa in your Smart Home

"Alexa, set the temperature of the lounge to 20 degrees."

This message is detected by Alexa and the command is sent to the Controller, whether it be a Hub, App, etc. The Controller then recognises the command and alters the temperature in the same way you would have, if you had used the app. All you have to do is tell Alexa what you want it to do!
